CLASS DESCRIPTION

In this workshop, students will create a beautiful black porcelain lamp base. Using natural materials such as seed pods, pinecones, and stones, we will explore texturing slabs of clay before assembling them into a lamp base. Students will gain hand building skills that are specific to porcelain, as well as wet slab forming, working with templates, texture rolling, and guided lamp wiring.

This class is beginner and intermediate friendly. Whether you've never touched clay or have a ton of experience, this is a fun space to create a one of a kind piece of functional artwork. We will be using Black Ice Porcelain, which is a premium porcelain clay body (manganese-free, non-toxic).

The first 3 hour session on April 12th, will be our time to work with clay and assemble our lamp bases. Afterward, Karen will carefully dry and kiln-fire the lamp bases to 2,160 Fahrenheit. In the second 1-1.5 hour session on April 18th, we will wire up our lamp bases and see them shine! Add a shade and bulb suited to your aesthetic.

Included in the class: Black Ice Porcelain, custom project templates, clay tools, kiln firing, and all necessary lamp wiring materials and tools (shade and bulb not included), thoughtful instruction.

An important note- the clay we are working with is very dark in color, so wear dark clothes to the first day of class (the clay will stain light clothing). Class will be held at Fever Metal Art Center, which is a climate-variant metal shop, so breathable clothing is necessary. I feel at home in the space in shorts and a T-shirt, and closed toe shoes (a must). We will be working at a standing table with a few tall stools in the shop, be prepared to stand and work. We will have plenty of iced bubble water and regular water available, as well as snacks.
